The Australian Reptile Park is situated at Somersby on the Central Coast
of Sydney and houses a wide range of indigenous critters and offers some
really amazing wildlife shows. You can see a whole lot of rare animal
species that are native of Australia and also some exciting shows taking
place. Get close with animals like dingoes, wombat or with Hugo the
Galapagos tortoise. Some really unique thing that you explore here is
the Indiana Jones themed exhibit 'Lost World of Reptiles', which is the
home to a wide range of deadly reptiles. Also present are the 'Spider
World' and the only funnel web spider venom milking show in the world.
Some history
The park was originally founded by Eric Worrell in 1948 at the Umina
Beach Aquarium. It was then moved to North Gosford and was renamed as
Australian Reptile Park. The last and final move was made in 1996 to
Somersby. The park met with an accident in 2000 when the main building
along with hundreds of reptiles and frogs were destroyed in a fire. It
was re-opened in the same year after seven weeks.
At present, the park is the only supplier of funnel-web spider and snake
venom to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL) for anti-venom
program.
Animals in the zoo
Snakes and reptiles at the park include crocodiles, American Alligators,
brown snakes, tortoises, turtles, skinks, monitor lizards, pythons,
komodo dragons, geckos, iguanas, taipans and death adders.
