Perth zoo started with only 6 staffs but now it has a whopping paid
staff of around 250 and around 300 volunteers. The zoo was opened in
1897 with the purpose of introducing European animals to Australian
folks. The first animals on display included an orangutan, two monkeys,
four ostriches, a pair of lions and a tiger. The first exhibits built
included two bear caves, a monkey house, a mammal house and a model
castle for guinea pigs.
With time the zoo has grown to a botanical paradise with shaded walkways
and grassy picnic areas. It provides perfect environ to see animals in a
habitant close to there natural escapes. The zoo has a habitant with a
close resemblance to the African Savannah with dry riverbed, striking
red soil, tall grasses and thorny trees. You can even grab the smell and
feel of Africa while checking out the baboons, giraffes, zebras, lions,
white rhinoceros, cheetahs, meerkats and hyenas here.
The zoo also has Asian Rainforest stimulation where monkeys call, Asian
elephants trumpet, orangutans watch and tigers wait. Presently it houses
around 1,300 native and exotic animals from over 230 species in a
sprawling 41-acre land. Perth zoo is famous for it breeding programs for
critically endangered species. It is a full institutional member of the
Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA).
