For those who wish to paint every experience of their life with vivid
strokes of adventure, Werribee Open Range Zoo, located along the quaint
Werribee River, about 32 kilometres south-west of Melbourne is just the
place to be. It is the place for those who want to catch the African
safari not on TV channels but live. Its sprawling 200 hectares of
grassland with waterways allows visitors to get up close and personal
with the African and Australian animals.
Once inside the open range, visitors can hire a bus that tours for an
hour divulging Australian animals like the emu, the brolga and the
pelican. Then it takes you across the oceans to the African continent
without a ticket with the savannahs coming alive with hippos, zebra,
waterbuck, giraffe and ostrich along with rhinoceros, camel and oryx in
the open confines of the grassland. There are also special Open Vehicle
Adventures, Canoe Safaris, Raising Rhino tours, Rip Roaring Feed which
takes you behind the scenes of Lions on the Edge.
The safari tour takes two independent trails: the Pula Reserve Walking
Trail (40 minutes) focusing on African animals and the other, Volcanic
Plains Walk (30 minutes) focusing on Australian ones. The safari tour
begins with the loading of the bus near the Meerkat Bistro and Function
Centre.
There is a stimulated African village, which has a mock scenario of a
ranger tracking down lions with an interactive simulated lion sounds
cape walk surrounding the walker. The Learning Centre and the zoo's
educational programs further reinforce the learning experience. The
Learning Centre is close to the entry of the park, with toilets and
first aid facilities.
The Zoo is open all the 365 days of the year from 9 am to 5 pm; the
front doors close at 3:30 pm. The zoo has facilities for an overnight
stay; it serves African feast and buffet dinner.
